Unfortunately it took SEVERAL skin scrapings at different times before the vet was able to determine that it actually was demodex, which is a form of mange that's carried in the animal's body from birth and flares up at some critical point in their life. Nicki was less than a year old when it showed up. It was quite a process, and nearly killed the dog, but the vet was able to get rid of it and Nicki lived a happy and healthy life for many years afterwards.
