Guernsey

Most little towns out here have at least one of these old buildings left.

On the way back from Manitou Beach, Emil and I took a drive around the wee village of Guernsey — or what is left of it.

I am 56 years old, and I remember when buildings very like these were still in use in my home town. Whenever and wherever I see these or buildings like them, I'm taken back to those slower, carefree days when the two-month summer vacation felt like an entire year. When there were no woodticks around here. When I had a bike-riding buddy. When my grandparents were alive.

  2. I always feel so sad seeing these pictures, thinking of the hive of activity they must have been back when.

    Lovely post on your son.

    1. Yes, all these little villages used to be going concerns. Everything's gotten centralized -- the governments have moved most of the hospitals to cities and you can't even have a baby in your own community anymore if you want a doctor present. I wonder if things will ever swing back to what they were and revitalize some of these rural places.

  3. I wonder when the city I live in will look like that.

    1. Has it ever happened to a city? Oh I guess so. A little research might tell me which ones. Pompeii doesn't count.
