Margo, Sask

Repairs to the hall in my home town, photo courtesy of K. Ekstrom, roving photographer

The house is quiet and serene today, as Scott is out and around doing his usual things, and Everett is experiencing his first real (as in, paid) day on the job with our friendly neighbourhood accountant. He's not sure how many hours he'll be getting but it sounds like he's to be put on the employee schedule.

Tomorrow morning he goes for his last hour with the driver's training instructor. After that we can make an appointment for the driver's test. Scott says they seem to flunk most everyone the first time they test, nowadays, unlike when we were 16 and rushing to get our licences the day of our birthday. I didn't parallel park properly (usually I could, but not the day of the test; so nervous I was soaking wet) but the tester told me to keep practising and passed me.

My hometown pub sustained severe hail damage several years ago

  1. Kate, the buildings look plain and functional; clearly the attraction is the people and community they have created. I've lived in places with similar facilities and thought the world of the community of people that lived there.
I presently live in a place that is beautiful on the outside, giving the impression of a nostalgic, ideal way of life; but it seems almost as empty as an echo, when it comes to any real sense of community.
Once you have experienced a healthy community there is no going back!

  2. I narrowly avoided an accident during my test and was passed for keeping my cool! Bet that wouldn't happen now. Our eldest is just starting a driving course that will get him 2 credits towards grad pass or fail. Lucky boy.
Soon I'll be crooning along with Harry Chapin:

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

  5. My Father is originally from Margo, and were currently aquiring a house their. Unfortunately, Margo is a dieing community. Faced with the Co-op closure, all thats left is post office, bar, occasional bank and a restaurant. All this said, I still love Margo, the people are great, and its an awesome way to escape the hussle and bustle of Saskatoon.

  6. It will always be home to me. As a matter of fact, I'm heading in that direction after lunch for a visit with my sister.
